A journalist observes life in the far north.
I just purchased this handbag, and I had to show it off. I bought it from a lady who makes jewelry and handbags to sell at bazaars around town. The stores in Fairbanks are nothing to write home about, but the handmade stuff for sale in this town is extraordinary. The lady who made this bag calls her business Solstice Creations. She is my new favorite, replacing Mountain Heather, whose hats I love. I can’t wait until the Farmer’s Market opens for the summer. It’s a place to shop for all kinds of homemade stuff.
If I had the gumption, I’d open a store here called Made in Fairbanks, where I’d offer stuff like the handbag and like these booties, which I bought for $5 from an 80-year-old woman who came into my work with all kinds of knitted baby stuff that she was selling cheap.
